Mountain West Announces Weekly Softball Awards
Feb. 19, 2013
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Colorado State junior shortstop Ashlie Ortega and New Mexico freshman lefthander Lauren Soles have been named Mountain West Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for games through February 17. This is the first career MW weekly accolade for both Ortega and Soles.
Ortega recorded three multi-hit games as Colorado State posted a 4-1 record at the Troy Cox Classic in Las Cruces, N.M., over the weekend. Batting from the leadoff position, the Brighton, Colo., native went 8-for-18 (.444) at the plate with two doubles, one triple, two home runs and four walks during the five-game span. She drove in 13 runs and scored six more. Ortega reached base safely in each game, beginning with a 2-for-4 performance in a 6-4, tournament-opening victory over Texas Tech. She recorded three RBI in the game while notching the first of two doubles on the weekend. Later that day, she drew the first of four walks against Penn State, scoring once in the Rams' 10-2 rout of the Nittany Lions. In the first of two games on Saturday, Ortega went 3-for-5 with three RBI and a double to help the Rams hold on for a 10-9 victory over host New Mexico State. She followed that performance with a 3-for-4, seven-RBI outing in a 17-16 comeback win over UMKC. With the bases loaded in the fourth inning against the Kangaroos, Ortega legged out a triple to centerfield to plate three Rams and then scored her second run of the game on a wild pitch, pulling CSU to within 14-6. In the fifth inning, she hit a three-run homer to left center as part of a seven-run rally. She went deep again two innings later with a lead-off home run to right center that started a three-run rally to send the game into extra innings. On Sunday, Ortega drew the last of four walks in a 9-2 loss to NMSU. Ortega finished the tournament with slugging and on-base percentages of 1.000 and .545, respectively. Defensively, she recorded 20 assists and five putouts from her shortstop position.
Soles went 2-0 at the Lobo Classic over the weekend, throwing two complete games without giving up an earned run over 12 innings in the circle. The Simi Valley, Calif., native got the start and threw all 7.0 innings for her first collegiate victory in the 3-1 decision over Bradley on Saturday, allowing just four hits while striking out seven batters and surrendering three walks and one unearned run. She also had two putouts in the game and pitched her way out of a runners-on-second-and-third situation in the top of the first inning. Soles started again on Sunday against Central Michigan and threw a no-hitter en route to the Lobos' 4-0 victory. She faced 16 batters in the game, which was shortened to 5.1 innings due to CMU's travel plans. Soles fanned six batters and walked none, with a lone batter reaching base due to a hit-by-pitch. She also recorded two putouts in the game to protect her no-hitter. For the week, Soles registered 13 strikeouts while giving up four hits, three walks and one unearned run.
