Soles Named MW Pitcher of the Week
Feb. 19, 2013
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - University of New Mexico freshman lefthander Lauren Soles has been named Mountain West Pitcher of the Week for games through February 17. This is the first career MW weekly accolade for the Lobo newcomer.
"We're all very proud of Lauren's performance this weekend," head coach Erica Beach said. "She was able to settle in on the mound and had tremendous defense behind her. She was absolutely dominating on the mound and is continuing to grow every game."
Soles went 2-0 at UNM's Lobo Classic over the weekend, throwing two complete games without giving up an earned run over 12 innings in the circle.
The Simi Valley, Calif., native got the start and threw all 7.0 innings for her first collegiate victory in the 3-1 decision over Bradley on Saturday, allowing just four hits while striking out seven batters and surrendering three walks and one unearned run. She also had two putouts in the game and pitched her way out of a runners-on-second-and-third situation in the top of the first inning.
Soles started again on Sunday against Central Michigan and threw a no-hitter en route to the Lobos' 4-0 victory. She faced 16 batters in the game, which was shortened to 5.1 innings due to Central Michigan's travel plans. Soles fanned six batters and walked none, with a lone batter reaching base due to a hit-by-pitch.
She also recorded two putouts in the game to protect her no-hitter.
For the week, Soles registered 13 strikeouts while giving up four hits, three walks and one unearned run.
"I had no doubt she would come in and be an impact player from day one," Beach said.
The Lobos travel to New Mexico State today for a 5 p.m. MT, Rio Grande Rivalry game with the Aggies.
