Senior Shenise Cox Named Mountain West Player of the Week
Feb. 21, 2012
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - New Mexico senior outfielder Shenise Cox has been named Mountain West Softball Player of the Week for games through February 19. This is the first career MW weekly accolade for Cox and the second for the Lobos this season.
Cox, a 5-8 senior from Antioch Calif., recorded multiple hits in four games, and homered in all five, as New Mexico posted a 4-1 record at its own Lobo Classic over the weekend.
She drove in 10 runs and scored 10 more while going 9-for-18 at the plate over the five-game span. Seven of those hits went for extra bases as Cox collected one double, one triple and five home runs.
In the Lobos' tournament-opening win over Central Arkansas, she hit a two-out, three-run homer to break open a 5-5 tie in the top of the fourth inning. Cox followed that with a seventh-inning triple, driving in New Mexico's final run en route to the 10-8 victory. She finished the game 2-for-5 with one triple, one home run, four RBI and one run scored.
Cox went 1-for-2 with one RBI, three runs scored and two walks as the Lobos cruised past Bryant, 15-1, in Friday's nightcap.
On Saturday, she went a combined 4-for-8 with two home runs, two RBI and five runs scored as the Lobos ran their record to 9-0 with victories over Northern Colorado (11-3) and Central Arkansas (5-3), tying a program record for best start.
Cox also provided some clutch hitting in Sunday's 10-6 loss to Purdue, launching a two-out, three-run homer that brought UNM to within one, 5-4, in the bottom of the second inning. She was 2-for-3 at the plate in a game that was shortened to five innings due to the Boilermakers' travel plans.
Cox finished the tournament with slugging and on-base percentages of 1.500 and .550, respectively, while recording six putouts from right field.
