Rebels Head West For Five Games

2012 UNLV Softball Weekly Notes - Week Three

LEADING OFF: After playing their first nine games at home in Las Vegas, the UNLV Rebels hit the road for the first time during the 2012 season with a trip to Santa Barbara, Calif. UNLV will participate in this weekend's Gaucho Classic I hosted by UC Santa Barbara beginning on Friday, Feb. 24 and runs through Sunday, Feb. 26.

The Rebels will play a total of five games with two on both Friday and Saturday, and one on Sunday. Besides UNLV and UCSB, San Diego, #23 Houston and Nevada, Reno will round out the five-team event.

The tournament schedule was shaken up earlier this week, and UNLV's opponents and games have been altered. The Rebels will still face USD twice. UNR, UH and UCSB will play UNLV once apiece.

The Rebels open up action on Friday against USD at 10:30 am and follow that immediately with a tussle with Silver State foe, UNR. UNLV will start Saturday's action bright and early at 8:15 am against UCSB before playing Houston at 10:30 am. The Rebels will end their stay along the coastline against USD on Sunday at noon.

ON DECK: The UNLV Rebels return to Las Vegas for its third and final home tournament with their Eller Media Stadium Classic. The three-day tournament will begin on Friday, March 2 and run through Sunday, March 4.

The Rebels will welcome Florida Atlantic, Illinois, New Mexico State and Seton Hall to Eller Media Stadium. UNLV will play against FAU, UI and NMSU once each and SHU twice.

THE LAST OUT(ING): The UNLV Rebels opened the second week of the 2012 campaign on a great note, as Amanda Oliveto thew her third-career no-hitter against Memphis. UNLV won that Thursday contest 1-0, but lost three of its next four games in its Louisville Slugger Desert Classic.

The Rebels split their pair of games on Friday with an 8-3 loss to DePaul before they rebounded in a 7-1 victory against Idaho State.

The squad then lost two straight with a late-inning, 4-3 loss to Ohio State and a 12-2, five-inning defeat to Hawai'i on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

UNLV was led offensively by six hits by both Jaexie Balilea and Taylor Aleman. Balilea hit .462 on the weekend with two home runs, three runs and two RBI. Aleman hit .375 with one home run, four runs and three RBI.

In the circle, Oliveto and O'Connor both picked up wins for UNLV. Oliveto went 1-2 on the weekend in 19.2 innings of work, four appearances and three starts. O'Connor picked up her win in five innings of action. Caitlin Klepper threw 4.1 innings and was 0-1.
