SAN DIEGO -
San Diego State Softball to Co-Host San Diego Classic I This Weekend
The San Diego State softball team returns to America's Finest City this weekend when it co-hosts the San Diego Classic I.
The four-day, 22-game tournament will be held at SDSU Softball Stadium (14 games) and USD Softball Complex (eight games) and begins Thursday.
The tournament could almost be called the Mountain West Invitational as six of the nine teams have some affiliation with the Aztecs' conference. Current MW members in the tournament are SDSU, Boise State, Fresno State and New Mexico, while Brigham Young (2000-11) was an original member of the league and Utah State is joining in 2014. In fact, either San Diego State or BYU have won each of the past eight regular season MW championships. No. 12/10 UCLA, Long Beach State and co-host San Diego are also in this weekend's tournament.
The Aztecs are slated to play Brigham Young at 6 p.m. PT Thursday, Long Beach State at 7 p.m. PT Friday, Utah State at 4:30 p.m. PT Saturday and No. 12/10 UCLA at 2 p.m. PT Sunday.
SDSU is 8-7 on the season with eight of its games against teams that made last year's NCAA tournament (3-5) and five of its seven losses coming to top-25 teams.
Senior Kamerin May (Corona, Calif.) leads San Diego State with a .388 batting average, while junior Patrice Jackson (Kansas City, Mo.) (.349, 2 HR, 6 RBI), junior Lorena Bauer (San Diego/Steele Canyon HS) (.341, 5 HR, 15 RBI) and sophomore Kayla Jordan (San Diego/Bonita Vista HS) (.327, 3 HR, 8 RBI) are also hitting over .300.
The 1-2 punch of freshman left-hander Danielle O'Toole (Upland, Calif.) (2-3, 1.35 ERA, 36.1 IP) and senior right-hander Rebecca Arbino (Clovis, Calif.) (6-4, 1.56 ERA, 63.0 IP) anchor a pitching staff that easily leads the league with a 1.57 ERA.
