Mountain West Announces Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week

March 8, 2012

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Boise State sophomore outfielder Tara Glover and San Diego State junior righthander Rebecca Arbino have been named Mountain West Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for games through March 4. This is the first career MW weekly accolade for both Glover and Arbino.

Glover, a 5-4 sophomore from Grants Pass, Ore., batted .563 (9-for-16) over five games in helping Boise State to a 4-1 record at the Wilson/DeMarini Invitational in Tempe, Ariz., last weekend. She recorded a hit in all five contests, including three multi-hit performances. For the weekend, Glover scored five runs and drove in three more, while adding two stolen bases and two walks. On Friday, Glover scored twice and stole a base in the Broncos' 16-1, five-inning rout of Howard before collecting two of Boise State's three hits, including a double, in the team's only loss (4-0) of the weekend vs. No. 5 Arizona State. On Saturday, she reached base twice against Creighton and stole her second base in three games in a 6-3 victory. The sophomore transfer followed that with three hits, two runs scored and one RBI in a 7-4 win over North Dakota State. One of Glover's three hits was a triple, her third of the 2011 campaign, which set a new school single-season record. In Sunday's 5-4 win over Wichita State, Glover hit her first home run of the season as part of a 2-for-4 outing at the plate. Glover finished the weekend with slugging and on-base percentages of .938 and .579, respectively, while recording one putout from her position in centerfield.

Arbino, a 6-0 junior from Clovis, Calif., posted a 3-1 record in six appearances for San Diego State last weekend at the San Diego Classic I. She registered an ERA of 1.47 and struck out 21 batters while surrendering six earned runs and 12 walks in 28.2 innings of work. On Thursday, Arbino tossed a complete-game shutout, allowing five hits and two walks while striking out eight in a 1-0 victory over BYU. After giving up one run on three hits in two-thirds of an inning of relief vs. Fresno State on Friday afternoon, Arbino came back in the nightcap to pitch a complete-game shutout against Charlotte, allowing six hits and four walks over five innings while fanning five en route to the 9-0 win. She gave up one run on four hits and a walk over three innings of relief vs. Saint Joseph's on Saturday before taking the 5-2 loss against Nevada later in the day, surrendering three runs on six hits and two walks, while striking out five over six innings. She closed out the weekend with a complete-game effort in Sunday's 7-1 win over Long Beach State, allowing one run on nine hits and three walks with two strikeouts.
