March 26, 2013

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - UNLV senior infielder Tayler Aleman and Fresno State freshman righthander Jill Compton have been named Mountain West Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for games through March 24. This is the first career MW weekly accolade for both players.

Aleman batted .556 (5-of-9) with three RBI and five runs scored while helping UNLV to a 2-1 record at its own Rebel Classic last weekend. The Las Vegas native opened tournament play on Friday with a combined 2-for-5 performance at the plate in two games, driving in two runs and scoring two more. She had an RBI and a sacrifice bunt as the Rebels fell to then-No. 19/18 Tulsa in their first outing of the day before going 2-for-3 with one RBI and two runs scored in a 5-3 victory over Texas Tech. On Saturday, Aleman went 3-for-4 in a 10-6 win over the nationally-ranked Golden Hurricane, finishing with three runs scored and one RBI. For the weekend, Aleman posted identical .556 on-base and slugging percentages. Defensively, she registered four assists and one error from her shortstop position.

Compton threw her second complete-game shutout of the season, working all seven innings of Fresno State's 1-0 victory over Pacific last Wednesday. The Oceano, Calif., native struck out four batters while surrendering three hits and one walk.
