Mountain West Announces Weekly Softball Awards

April 9, 2013

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - New Mexico senior rightfielder Cassandra Kalapsa and UNLV junior righthander Amanda Oliveto have been named Mountain West Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for games through April 7. This is the second MW weekly award for Oliveto this season and third of her career, while Kalapsa garners the honor for the first time.

Kalapsa batted .600 (3-for-5) while leading New Mexico to a 2-1 Mountain West series win over Boise State last week in Albuquerque. The Atwater, Calif., native homered twice, scored three runs and drove in another three for the weekend. She also registered on-base and slugging percentages of .750 and 1.800, respectively. On Friday, Kalapsa went 2-for-2 with two RBI, two runs scored and two walks. After drawing a bases-loaded walk that drove in a run in the fifth inning, Kalapsa hit a walkoff home run in the bottom of the seventh to lift the Lobos to a 7-6 victory. In the second game of the series on Saturday, Kalapsa went 1-for-2 at the plate, recording her second solo home run of the weekend in the bottom of the third inning. She also had a sacrifice bunt in the second frame that advanced the Lobos' leadoff batter, who eventually went on to score New Mexico's first run of the 6-5 win. On Sunday, Kalapsa went 0-for-1 and drew her third walk of the series in New Mexico's 13-0, five-inning loss to the Broncos.

Oliveto went 1-0 in UNLV's three-game Mountain West series against Fresno State last weekend. The Simi Valley, Calif., product registered one complete game and a 0.66 ERA over two starts, working a total of 10.2 innings. She was touched for five runs (one earned) and nine hits, while striking out 10 batters and walking five. In her first start of the series on Friday, she threw all seven frames and allowed one earned run off six hits in the 4-1 victory. She struck out eight Bulldogs while walking three. Oliveto also saw action in Sunday's series finale, throwing the first 3.2 innings before giving way to a reliever. She surrendered four unearned runs off three hits with two strikeouts and two walks.
