COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - UNLV sophomore third baseman Jaexie Balilea and New Mexico freshman righthander Carrie Sheehan have been named Mountain West Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for games through April 8. This is the first career MW weekly accolade for both Balilea and Sheehan.
Las Vegas native Balilea batted .857 (6-of-7) while helping UNLV to a doubleheader sweep (8-5, 12-2) of Fresno State on the road last Wednesday. She recorded back-to-back multi-hit performances, going 3-for-4 in the first game and 3-for-3 in the nightcap. Overall, Balilea reached base safely in eight of nine plate appearances, adding two walks to her five singles and one double. She recorded seven total bases, four RBI and three runs, while registering a 1.000 slugging percentage and a .889 on-base percentage over the two-game stretch. Defensively, she was perfect in the field with nine assists in as many tries.
Sheehan made the start in game one of New Mexico's road doubleheader sweep of Cal State Northridge on Sunday, scattering five hits over 4.1 innings of work. The Las Vegas product faced 18 batters, striking out one and walking none while allowing one earned run en route to the 5-1 victory.
