SDSU Softball Travels to USD on Wednesday

April 17, 2012

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State softball team makes the short drive across town to face San Diego at 6 p.m. PT Wednesday. The Aztecs (21-19, 3-0 MW) and Toreros (23-13, 10-2 PCSC) will be meeting for the 54th time with SDSU owning a 50-3 lead in the series.

San Diego State is coming off a three-game series sweep over Colorado State last weekend. The Aztecs hit .350 as a team, led by senior Felicia Reifschneider (San Diego/Morse HS) (3-for-4, .750), redshirt junior Patrice Jackson (Kansas City, Mo.) (4-for-7, .571), senior Ashley Rose (Antioch, Calif.) (5-for-9, .556), freshman Kayla Jordan (San Diego/Bonita Vista HS) (5-for-9, .556) and sophomore Hayley Miles (Antelope, Calif.) (5-for-10, .500). Senior Bailey Micetich (Woodland, Calif.), meanwhile, went 1-0 with a save and a 1.91 ERA over 7 1/3 innings en route to being named the Mountain West Pitcher of the Week. She struck out seven and walked just one, while limiting her opponents to a .281 average with only one extra-base hit out of the nine she allowed.

Miles continues to lead the offense in almost every category, including current program single-season bests in batting average (.406), on-base percentage (.476), slugging percentage (.766), OPS (OB% + SLG %) percentage (1.242), extra-base hits (26) and doubles (15). She has also added a team-high nine home runs and 39 runs (the next highest on the team is 15).

Senior Justeen Maeva (San Diego/Mira Mesa HS) (.288) is tied with Miles for the team lead in RBIs (28), while sophomore Lorena Klopp (San Diego/Steele Canyon HS) (.306) returned from a recent injury and has eight homers and 22 RBIs. Reifschneider tops SDSU in stolen bases (9) and sacrifice bunts (8), and Jordan's four triples are one short of tying a single-season school record.

Redshirt junior Rebecca Arbino (Clovis, Calif.) and Micetich have logged the bulk of innings in the circle for San Diego State. Arbino is 10-8 with a 2.20 ERA and four saves over 120 2/3 innings, while Micetich is 9-6 with a 2.36 ERA and one save in 107 innings.

USD, meanwhile, is having one of its best seasons in recent memory. San Diego is 23-13 (10-2 PCSC) and in the midst of a four-game winning streak. Earlier this season, the Toreros went 5-0 at the San Diego Classic I to capture the tournament title (the Aztecs went 3-3 in that same tournament).

Lauren Tomey leads the .290-hitting USD team with a .381 average to go along with four home runs and 22 RBIs. Taylor Hensley (.352, 7 HR, 25 RBI), Chloe Kaneko (.347, HR, 18 RBI) and Jessica Tieszen (.317, 2 HR, 18 RBI) are also hitting over .300. Cassidy Coleman (10-4, 1.84 ERA, 99.0 IP) and Jenny Lahitte (11-6, 109.0 IP) have led the San Diego pitching staff.
