COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - UNLV sophomore rightfielder Stefany Valentino has been named Mountain West Player of the Week while Boise State senior righthander Aubray Zell and San Diego State senior righthander Bailey Micetich share Mountain West Pitcher of the Week honors for games through May 5. This is the ninth career MW weekly accolade for Micetich, fifth for Zell and first for Valentino.
Valentino helped UNLV snap a six-game losing streak in MW action as the Rebels posted a 2-1 record on the road at New Mexico last week. The Oak Park, Calif., native registered two hits in each contest, going 6-of-10 (.600) for the series. She finished with five singles and one grand slam, recording a .900 slugging percentage while producing six RBI and four runs scored. On Saturday, Valentino went 2-for-2 with two walks, one RBI and one run in the 13-7 loss. In Sunday's series finale, she scored the game-tying run in the seventh inning and followed that up in the eighth with the game-winning hit, an RBI single that capped off seven unanswered runs for the Rebels in the 7-6 win. Valentino finished the day going 2-for-4 with one walk, two runs scored and one RBI. Defensively, she had two putouts and two errors from her outfield position.
Zell went 1-1 in two starts during Boise State's weekend series at San Diego State. She returned to the circle Sunday for four and two-thirds innings in the 7-1 loss to SDSU, giving up five runs on nine hits and a walk. Zell finished the week with a 3.60 earned run average in 11.2 innings pitched. She allowed 15 hits while striking out six and walking two.
