THE LAST OUT(ING): The UNLV Rebels went 2-1 last weekend in a three-game Mountain West series on the road against the New Mexico Lobos. UNLV won the first and third games with scores of 8-4 and 7-6, respectively. UNM notched the victory in the middle contest by a 13-7 final score.
Both victories were of the come-from-behind variety. The first game witnessed the Rebels overcome a three-run deficit with eight unanswered runs. Stefany Valentino's fourth-inning grand slam put UNLV ahead for good in the 8-4 win. In the finale, the squad found itself down by six runs until they evened things up in the seventh before getting a game-winning single from Valentino in the eighth.
UNLV's offense was led by four players that scattered at least three hits and owned .375 or better batting averages. Valentino led the quartet with a .600 average with six hits, six RBI and four runs scored. Jaexie Balilea tied Valentino in hits with six of her own, while hitting .500 on the weekend. Paige Emerson hit .455, collected five hits, three of which were doubles, and led the team in runs with five.
VALENTINO VALIDATES PLAY: UNLV's Stefany Valentino has been named the Mountain West Player of the Week for games played through May 5. This is the first career MW weekly accolade for Valentino.
Valentino helped UNLV to a 2-1 record on the road at New Mexico last week. The Oak Park, Calif., native registered two hits in each contest, going 6-of-10 (.600) for the series. She finished with five singles and one grand slam, recording a .900 slugging percentage while producing six RBI and four runs scored. Overall, Valentino reached base safely in 10 of 14 plate appearances, collecting four walks in addition to her six hits for a .714 on-base percentage.
In Friday's series opener, after recording a single and a walk in her first two at-bats, she hit a fourth-inning grand slam to right field to erase a three-run deficit and put UNLV up for good en route to the 8-4 victory. On Saturday, Valentino went 2-for-2 with two walks, one RBI and one run in the 13-7 loss. In Sunday's series finale, she scored the game-tying run in the seventh inning and followed that up in the eighth with the game-winning hit, an RBI single that capped off seven unanswered runs for the Rebels in the 7-6 win. Valentino finished the day going 2-for-4 with one walk, two runs scored and one RBI.
