SDSU Softball Begins NCAA Los Angeles Regional Friday vs. No. 20/20 Florida State
The San Diego State softball begins its quest for the Women's College World Series this weekend when it travels to the campus of UCLA to compete in the NCAA Los Angeles Regional.

The Aztecs (30-22) earned the No. 3 seed in the double-elimination regional and will face second-seeded No. 20/20 Florida State (46-14) at 3 p.m. PT Friday. The No. 12 overall seed and No. 15/14 UCLA (36-18) and Hofstra (38-13) will meet in the 5:30 p.m. PT contest.

SDSU extended its school record with its fifth consecutive trip to the NCAA tournament and eighth in 12 seasons by winning the Mountain West title and automatic bid with a 9-3 record.

This weekend's Los Angeles Regional is the toughest of the 16 in the country, according to the RPI. With UCLA (No. 13 RPI), Florida State (No. 16), the Aztecs (No. 45) and Hofstra (No. 49), the quartet averages a 30.75 RPI, just edging out the Columbia (Mo.) Regional (31.50 average with Missouri (No. 14), DePaul (No. 26), Massachusetts (No. 34) and Illinois State (No. 52).

This year's national tournament features 64 teams, with four teams participating at 16 regional sites in a double-elimination tournament. The regional winners will advance to super regional competition for a best-of-three series from May 24-27 at eight campus sites. The remaining eight teams will advance to the Women's College World Series (WCWS), an eight-team, double-elimination tournament with the championship final being a best-of-three series. The WCWS will be conducted May 31-June 6 at the ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City.
