Rebels, Alumae Play To A Draw

LAS VEGAS ( - The UNLV softball team and a squad made up of Rebel alumnae played to a 3-3 tie on Saturday morning (Nov. 3) at Eller Media Stadium. The current edition of the Scarlet & Gray used the long ball to score all three of its runs, while the alumnae scored its runs off a double steal, a fielder's choice groundout and a single.

The Rebels got on the scoreboard first off a solo home run by Heather Harrison to left field off of Stephanie Bregante (2007-10).

The alumnae answered back an inning later when Becky (McDonald) Pugh (2003-06) crossed the plate on a wild pitch. Pugh had initially reached on a walk issued by Amanda Oliveto. She then made her way over to third following an illegal pitch and a groundout.

The game remained 1-all until the alumnae broke the tie with a score in the sixth. They started the frame with runners on first and second. Former NFCA All-American Sara (Mallett) Leoni (1993-96) pushed both runners into scoring position following a sacrifice bunt. Ashli Holland (2008-11), the 2011 Mountain West Player of the Year, gave the alumnae a one-run lead when she scored on a fielder's choice grounder by Kendall Fearn (2006-10).

In the bottom half of the six, the Rebels responded with back-to-back extra base hits. With one out, Samantha Juarez smashed a two-run, go-ahead home run that plated Jaexie Balilea, who began the offensive with a double to left off Jessica O'Connor (2009-12).

The final run of the game was scored in the top of the seventh after the alumnae began the inning with the bases loaded. Alyssia (De La Torre) Perez (2007-10) led off with an RBI seeing-eye single off Francesca Foti through the left side that easily scored Holland from third.

UNLV's starting 5-9 hitters - Balilea, Juarez, Harrison, Tayler Van Acker and Stefany Valentino - collected five of the team's six hits in 11 at-bats for a .455 batting average. Alyssa Cordova had the sixth hit for the Rebels after entering the game as a substitute at second base.

The Rebels used a pair of pitchers in the game - Oliveto and Foti. Oliveto faced 18 batters and held the alumnae hitless in 14 at-bats. She struck out seven and issued three walks. Foti, who walked three, faced 12 batters with the alumnae recording one hit in nine at-bats against her.

The alumnae used three pitchers - Bregante, O'Connor and Pugh. Bregante was touched for three hits (one home run and two singles) and one run. She struck out four and walked three. O'Connor allowed two runs off two hits (one home run and one double), while walking two and striking out one. Pugh faced seven and gave up one hit to one strikeout.

Also playing for the alumnae were: Marissa Nichols (2005-10), Julie Crandall (1995-98), Laura Briones (2007-10), Patricia Spencer (1989-92), Jaci Hull (2006-10), Brittany (Bolinger) Stetkevich (2006-09), Bri (Bernardi) LaRussa (2006-11), Paige Emerson (2010-12) and Korin Cuico (2009-12). In attendance, but not playing were: Amie Stewart (1992-95), Debbie Wilson (1985-86), Heather (Siegel) George (1993-97), Felicia Benjamins (1989-92), Brittany Meade (2005-09), Bridget Byrne (2001-04), Melissa Jantz (1992-93), Arica (Painter) Dorff (2000-02), Geney Orris (1999-02) and Nicole (Truax) Chacon (1999-02).
