FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State's first year head coach Trisha Ford revealed the 2013 softball schedule on Monday, which includes two tournaments at Bulldog Diamond. The Bulldogs face eight teams that made postseason runs in 2012, two of which made an appearance in the Women's College World Series.
"Playing against NCAA tournament teams only prepares you for the postseason," said Ford. "It is something that we have traditionally scheduled and will continue to do so. Being battle tested is a quality that all winning teams have."
The Bulldogs open the season with the Fresno State Kick Off Tournament on Feb. 8-10 featuring the Bulldogs, UTEP, UC Riverside, Southern Miss, UC Davis and Sacramento State. It is the first of two tournaments the `Dogs will host in Bulldog Diamond.
"The opening weekend gives us an opportunity to face some top out of region opponents that will be important for our post season positioning," Ford said of competition in the Fresno State Kick Off Tournament.
Other nonconference tournaments Fresno State will participate in February and March are Gaucho Classic hosted by UC Santa Barbara, Santa Clara Tournament, San Diego State Classic and Capital Classic hosted by Sacramento State.
The `Dogs host their second tournament of the season, the Bayer CropScience Classic on March 7-10. The Bayer CropScience Classic will feature Iowa State, Oregon, Oregon State, Cal and St. Mary's. Cal, Oregon and Oregon State all competed in the NCAA Tournament in 2012.
"It is such a great opportunity to be able to host tournaments early in the season," Ford said. "We are looking forward to some of the best teams coming out to compete. The Bayer CropScience Classic is an exciting tournament that will feature several post season teams."
Fresno State begins its first season in the Mountain West on March 28 with a three game series against Nevada at home. It is the first time since 2009 the `Dogs have begun conference play in Bulldog Diamond. The Bulldogs also host conference opponents Boise State and New Mexico for three game series in Fresno, Calif.
"We are very excited about playing in the Mountain West conference and look forward to the many battles on the diamond. The conference brings a high level of competition that we are preparing hard for."
The Bulldogs hit the road for conference series against UNLV, Colorado State and San Diego State. The `Dogs finish up the season with a double header at Long Beach State.
