Lobos Win 7-0 to Start Dual Match Season
Feb. 2, 2013
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Lobos started their dual match season a little late from their projected start time of 12 p.m. MT as they waited for the UNM men’s tennis team to finish up their singles portion from their dual match. It was a great sight to see as both UNM men’s and women’s tennis teams were on all six courts inside the Bubble at the Linda Estes Tennis Complex with both teams playing against Western New Mexico.
Doubles kicked off their dual match season with a bang as they faced the Western New Mexico Mustangs.
At the number one spot, Michaela Bezdickova and Laura Richardson paired up together to face Ganna Tiurina and Ashley Newell. The duo dropped only two games and clinched the doubles point with a score of 8-2.
At the number two position, Kristin Eggleston and Nikolina Grbac took on Doris Berberic and Diamond Morrill. The two were at 5-6 and did not finish their match since the Lobos had already secured the doubles point win.
“I don’t usually get to play doubles but it was a fun experience,” Kuuttila said. “That energy is really high. We were competing hard and it was a lot of fun to be out there.”
After doubles wrapped up, it was now time for singles.
At the number one spot, Bezdickova competed against Tiurina. Bezdickova dropped only three games to win with a score of 6-1, 6-2 and clinch the dual match win to put UNM 1-0 for the season.
At number two singles, Eggleston faced Newell. The two battled it out and had some really close points, but Eggleston took care of business and finished off the match with a score of 6-3, 6-4.
At the number three position, Grbac took on Osuna. Grbac dropped only four games to win the match 6-3, 6-1.
At the number four spot, Katie Wookey faced Berberic. Wookey had complete control over her opponent as she won her match 6-1, 6-1.
At number five singles, Richardson battled it out against Morrill. Richardson was the second off the court and finished with a score of 6-1, 6-0.
“It felt good [to win],” Richardson said. “I played well. I focused hard and I didn’t really have any slip-ups.”
At the number six spot, Kuuttila took on Davida Aragon. Kuuttila dropped only one game to come off the court first winning with a score of 6-1, 6-0.
“Overall it was a great match,” Head Coach Erica Perkins Jasper said. “I thought our team energy was the best it has ever been. Good way to start the spring.”
With the win over Western New Mexico, the Lobos are now 1-0 overall. The Lobos will play next in a three match series against Pacific, Northern Arizona, and UTEP at home on February 15-17.
