Falcons Defeat Northern Arizona, 6-1

Feb. 4, 2012

The Air Force women's tennis team won its third straight match Saturday, defeating Northern Arizona, 6-1, in Las Cruces, N.M. The Falcons (5-1) swept all six singles matches after losing the doubles point.

AFA's No. 3 team of junior Christine Molina and freshman Tiffany Tran captured the only doubles win for Air Force, downing Ghizelene Doballah and Alice Pacaut, 8-2. NAU took the doubles point with wins at the Nos. 1 and 2 spots.

The Falcons rebounded nicely, however, and won all six singles matches, four of them in straight sets. Junior Melissa Cecil remained undefeated at the No. 1 spot by saving three match points and defeating Doballah, 4-6, 7-6(6), (11-9). Tran also won in three sets, beating Malia Wahinepio, 4-6, 7-5, (10-3) at the No. 3 spot. Molina (No. 2), senior Tahlia Smoke (No. 4), junior Hannah Dake (No. 5) and sophomore Natasha Rizvi (No. 6) each won in straight sets.

"This was another really good win for our team," said Air Force head coach Kim Gidley. "Northern Arizona always has strong doubles and we lost the doubles point for the first time this season. We responded well in singles, led by Melissa (Cecil), who led another great effort today."

The Falcons look for their fourth straight win on Sunday against UTEP in El Paso, Texas.
