TCU Gets Back on Track With 4-3 Win at Oklahoma
Feb. 19, 2012
NORMAN, Okla. – TCU’s women’s tennis team snapped a two-match skid Sunday afternoon with a 4-3 win over No. 32 Oklahoma at the Sooners’ Headington Family Tennis Center.
Playing in her TCU debut, sophomore Gabi Barbosa clinched the match for the No. 47 Horned Frogs with a 6-7, 6-3, 6-2 win over Nicole Long at No. 5 singles. Her triumph allowed TCU to improve to 4-2 on the year, while future Big 12-opponent OU fell to 5-5.
“I’m really proud of the team competing hard, especially Gabi Barbosa in her first match,” TCU assistant coach Jason Marshall. “She hasn’t played a match in almost a year-and-a-half. I was really proud of her for coming back after being down a set. She showed me a lot.”
The Frogs were able to win the crucial doubles point to open the match, despite being forced to use two duos that had yet to play together this spring. Gaby Mastromarino and Simona Parajova teamed up at No. 3 doubles for the second-straight match and were 8-0 winners over Abbi Melrose and Whitney Wofford.
Joined for the first time this season, Kelsey Sundaram and Stefanie Tan were able to clinch the point for the Frogs when they took down Long and Mia Lancaster, 8-3, at the second court. Due to injuries, TCU entered the match with a limited roster.
Mastromarino wasted no time getting right back to work in singles for TCU, grabbing a straight-set win at No. 4 singles. The Jupiter, Fla., native’s 6-1, 6-3 decision over Melrose put the Frogs in front 2-0 on the scoreboard.
Tan was then able to push the Frog advantage to 3-0 when she dropped Lancaster, 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 3 singles spot. The Bishan, Singapore, native won for the second-straight time to improve to 3-2 this spring.
The Sooners got wins at No. 2 and 6 singles to close the gap to 3-2 before Barbosa was able to outlast Long in her match to give TCU a 19-12 all-time advantage against Oklahoma. After the match was clinched, Olivia Smith dropped a gritty decision at No. 1 singles, falling to Whitney Ritchie, 6-2, 6-7, 7-5.
TCU returns to action Feb. 27 when it hosts Texas A&M at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. First serve against the Aggies is set for 5:30 p.m.
