No. 48 SDSU Women's Tennis Falls to No. 72 LSU, 6-1
Feb. 21, 2012
SAN DIEGO -
The Aztecs continued their stellar doubles play as they claimed the point to start the day. Emma Cioffi and Laura Antonana Iriarte were the first duo off the court after defeating Ebie Wilson and Ariel Morton, 8-3, at the third position. Teammates Julia Wais and Alicia Aguilar then secured the early lead for the home team as they recorded an 8-4 win over Yvette Vlaar and Olivia Howlett at No. 2.
In singles, SDSU dropped matches at Nos. 3 and 4 in straight-sets fashion as LSU took a 2-1 lead. The remaining four matches were battles with three going to a third set and a fourth being pushed to a tiebreaker in each of the two sets.
No. 117 Wais, who was at the top of the singles ladder, dropped her first set with Howlett, 6-4, but rallied to take the second, 6-3. The Aztecs' lone nationally ranked player, however, was unable to break Howlett en route to a 6-3 third-set loss.
Cioffi suffered a similar fate, but started on a good note by capturing the first set by a 6-1 score. The next two sets were not as kind as Whitney Wolf clinched the match for the Tigers with her 6-2, 7-5 performance.
Even with the outcome decided, San Diego State continued to battle, but wound up on the wrong side of the score in each of the remaining matches.
Kristin Buth and Vlaar were involved in a tight match, but the Tiger emerged with the 7-6, 7-6 win at No. 6. Aguilar, meanwhile, went to a third set with Keri Frankenberger and she, too, finished a bit short, losing 6-2, 6-4, 7-6.
The Aztecs are back in action on Friday when they face Washington in Seattle at 1:30 p.m. PT.
