Lobos Think Pink While Taming the Mustangs 7-0
Feb. 25, 2012
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.—The Lobos had an exciting day this Saturday as they took on Western New Mexico at home defeating them with a score of 7-0. It was not just the win that made the day exciting. It was also the fact that the Lobos raised almost 1,300 dollars to be donated directly to the UNM Hospital Cancer Center to fight breast cancer.
The Lobos hosted their First Annual THINK PINK Fundraiser not knowing how well it would go or if it would even be a success. The results were astonishing. The Lobos raised almost 1,300 dollars along with 2,000 dollars being given in donations for the prizes being won.
“Michelle Heidbrink at the beginning of last year decided that she wanted to do a THINK PINK fundraiser and we supported her idea,” Junior Kristin Eggleston said. “It was great that we could find a way to support the community and give back.”
Not only did the Lobos raise money for the community, but they also played against Western New Mexico improving their overall record to 4-2.
Kristin Eggleston and Maria Sablina were the first to come off the court playing at number three doubles. The duo seemed to have no problems giving up only one game to Aragon/Irvin. The Lobos won with a score of 8-1.
The Lobos gained the lead in the dual match leading with a score of 1-0. It was now onto singles.
At number one singles, Michaela Bezdickova played against Ganna Tiurina. She easily won her first set 6-0. The second set was a much different story with Michaela Bezdickova falling behind 2-5. She took each game one step at a time however, coming back winning five straight games. She won the match 6-0, 7-5.
Susanna Kuuttila played at number two singles against Nikolina Vukadin. She gave up only two games defeating her with a score of 6-2, 6-0.
Kristin Eggleston defeated Ashley Newell at number three singles also with a score of 6-2, 6-0.
At the number four spot, Katie Wookey took complete domination of the match against Doris Berberic. She did not drop a single game winning the match 6-0, 6-0.
Michaela Oldani dropped only two games against Davida Aragon at the number five position, finishing with a score of 6-0, 6-2.
At number six singles, Laura Richardson defeated Erica Rasmussen with a score of 6-1, 6-1.
The Lobos won at home for the first time this season and could not have picked a better time to do so than to win while hosting their first THINK PINK fundraiser.
“The THINK PINK Fundraiser was a huge success. We had a great turnout. We had so much support from so many people from the community,” Assistant coach Michelle Heidbrink said. “We raised almost 1,300 dollars which is amazing since this was our first THINK PINK event. It was very successful and we won 7-0 against Western New Mexico.”
The Lobos will carry this victory against Western New Mexico into their next matches when they face UTEP, New Mexico State, and Idaho on the road this week.
