Tennis Recap: Colorado State picks up first dual win of spring season 

Rams defeat New Mexico State for first win 

LAS CRUCES, N.M.- The Colorado State women’s tennis team won its first match of the spring season Friday, defeating New Mexico State 4-3. In the win freshman Abby Stevens notched her second singles victory in as many matches, defeating the Aggies’ Denise Van Der Ben 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, at the No. 2 position. 

“I thought this was a real close match, and I thought our team adjusted real well to playing in outdoor weather,” said head coach Jon Messick. “This was by far the best overall match we have played this year, and even in the matches we lost I thought we competed really well.”

The Rams captured the crucial doubles point by defeating the Aggies’ in all three matches. Heffron and doubles partner Adriana Wojakowska defeated the Aggies’ Ginet Pinero and Ros-Polly Nguyen by a score of 9-8. Stevens and partner Mollie Cooper stayed undefeated in doubles by defeating Williams, and Lisa Roslanova 8-4.

Rams sophomore Natalie Heffron took the singles point against the Aggies’ Jodie Williams after Williams had to retire due to injury. Lauren Pick defeated the Aggies’ Roslanova 6-0, 7-5 for her first singles victory on the spring season. 

The Rams will look to pick up another win when they take on Northern Arizona Saturday, March 2, at 10 a.m.
