March 4, 2012
SAN DIEGO -
The Aztecs earned the doubles point for the fifth time in their last six outings to take a 1-0 lead to start the afternoon. Julia Wais and Alicia Aguilar dismissed Claudia Razzeto and Miya Jin, 8-2, at the middle of the order. LMU, however, answered with a win at No. 3, but San Diego State secured the point when Sierra Ellison and Roxanne Ellison were 8-4 winners in their match with Elisaveta Pironkova and Reka Rohonyi at No. 1.
The Lions tied the score at 1-1 and ultimately took a 2-1 lead with singles victories at Nos. 3 and 4. Sierra Ellison leveled the score after she defeated Ashley Anderson at No. 5 in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.
The win at No. 5 sparked the Aztecs as they went on to post victories at Nos. 1, 2 and 6 to halt their mid-season losing streak.
Wais earned a hard-fought three-set decision (6-3, 3-6, 6-4) vs. April Bisharat at the top of the singles ladder to move SDSU ahead, 3-2. The clincher came from Emma Cioffi, who downed Razzeto in three sets, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2.
Kristin Buth rounded out the San Diego State win with her 6-7, 6-1, 6-1 effort over Rohonyi at No. 6.
The Aztecs will look to build on their victory on Friday, March 9, when they play host to UC Santa Barbara at 2 p.m. PT. Admission at Aztec Tennis Center is free.
