Frogs Roll Past Marquette For Third-Straight Win
March 11, 2012
FORT WORTH – TCU women’s tennis picked up its third-straight win Sunday, a 6-1 triumph over Marquette, inside the indoor facility of the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
The 33rd-ranked Horned Frogs improved to 7-3 and closed their four-match home stand with a 2-1 mark. Marquette fell to 8-4 on the year. In the three meetings between TCU and Marquette all-time, TCU is 3-0.
“I liked how the kids competed today,” TCU coach Dave Borelli said. “Stefanie was down a match point and came back. Millie was pretty rusty from not having played in a while, but she battled and competed. We needed her to play this match before our road trip. I thought the kids did a good job of competing against a good indoor team. We were able to rest Simona and now hopefully we’ll have every body healthy before we go on the road.”
TCU won all three of the doubles matches to open play, with Federica Denti and Kelsey Sundaram coming off the court first in an 8-2 victory over Rocio Diaz and Ana Pimienta at No. 2 doubles.
Gabi Barbosa and Gaby Mastromarino clinched the point for the Frogs with their 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles. Playing together for the first time since Feb. 8, 42nd-ranked Millie Nichols and Olivia Smith added an 8-6 win at the No. 1 spot.
Smith was the first to draw blood for the Frogs in singles play, making quick work of her opponent at No. 2 singles. The Bath, England, native knocked off Gillian Hush, 6-2, 6-1. Mastromarino followed suit to make it 3-0 in favor of TCU with a 6-4, 6-2 over Vanessa Foltinger.
At No. 3 singles, Denti continued her solid play of late by getting the better of Ali Dawson, 6-3, 6-2. The Bellano, Italy, native’s win scored the clinching point for the Frogs and ran her spring record in singles to 7-1.
Stefanie Tan won for the third-straight time to the courts, while picking up her second-straight win at No. 1 singles. She was a 4-6, 7-6 (1), 1-0 (6) winner over Marquette’s Olga Fischer. Sundaram added a 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (6) win for TCU’s sixth and final point from the No. 6 court.
TCU returns to action March 18 when it travels to Alabama. The match against the Crimson Tide starts a four-match road swing for the Frogs.
