The Lobos are About More Than Just Scores

FLAGSTAFF, ARIZ.—The Lobos may have come out of this weekend 0-2, but scores are not all that matters. Many of the players have shown improvement, according to Head Coach Roy Canada.

The Northern Arizona match had two wins in the match both at the number one spot.

Michaela Bezdickova came out on top in the first match against Northern Arizona defeating Ghizelene Doballah at number one singles. Michaela Bezdickova dropped only four games to win with a score of 6-4, 6-0.

The doubles team of Michaela Bezdickova and Alyssa Caffey faced off against Doballah/Wahinepio at number one doubles. The match was a close one with UNM coming out on top in a 7-point tiebreak winning the match 9-8 (7-4).

Northern Arizona ultimately won the match 6-1 against the Lobos improving their overall record to 5-8, while UNM’s record was changed to 5-4.

The Lobos faced off against the University of Akron the next day, currently ranked #65 in the nation but was ranked #50 in the country with a now record of 13-1.

The University of Akron’s roster consists of all international players.

The Lobos showed a much better game today against this nationally ranked team gaining two points both at the top two singles.

Michaela Bezdickova played against Zara Harutyunyan at the number one spot coming close in the first set, but finishing out strong defeating her with a score of 7-6 (7-5), 6-1.

At number two singles, Susanna Kuuttila defeating Olga Shkundina with a score of 6-2, 6-2. The UNM freshman currently has a 6-4 record in singles, the second best singles record for the team this season.

“Akron is a red hot team right now with a 13-1 record. Every match was a long fought battle that the scores do not reflect accurately. We played strong this weekend seeing some improvements across all of our matches,” Head Coach Roy Canada said. “Even though we lost, the improvement from yesterday to today was very encouraging. I believe our best tennis is just around the corner.”

The Lobos will travel to Stockton, California to take on Pacific and Fresno Pacific on March 17-18, 2012.
