March 10, 2013

BOISE, IDAHO—The Lobos crushed the Eastern Washington Eagles 6-1 on their final day on the road this weekend. The Lobos will continue to be on the road to tour the state of California to face Cal State Northridge and Loyola Marymount on their respective home courts.

The Lobos started off the morning ready for doubles action.

At the number two spot, Nikolina Grabc and Kristin Eggleston were the first to finish as Eastern Washington’s Kelsey Knight and Chelsea Patton took a hold of the match to defeat them 8-4.

On the third court, the duo of Sarah Mahboob Khan and Michaela Oldani put UNM back into the doubles point by defeating their opponents Rocio Norena and Alexis Filliol with a  score of 8-2.

It came down the first court to decide the doubles point and the momentum for heading into singles.

The duo of Michaela Bezdickova and Laura Richardson clinched the doubles point in a close battle against Chrissy Uriarte and Moira Hedberg. UNM won the match 8-6 and put the Lobos up on the board for the dual match.

Once UNM had possession of the momentum, there was essentially no stopping them as they powered through singles.

The first to come off the court was Khan at number four singles since her opponent Knight was forced to retire with Khan ahead four games.

The next to come off the court was senior Richardson at number five singles as she defeated her opponent Ryann Warner with a score of 6-2, 6-2. This put the Lobos up 3-0 already into the match. They only needed one more point to clinch it.

Senior Eggleston clinched the dual match for the Lobos after she defeated Patton at number three singles with a score of 6-3, 6-3. The Lobos are now 5-6 overall and are now 2-1 when play in neutral territory.

Bezdickova continued to increase her dual match record at number one to 10-1 after she defeated her opponent Hedberg with a score of 6-2, 6-4. She was the fourth to finish.

Katie Wookey had a tough match at number six singles against Filliol falling with a score of 6-2, 6-2.

The last to finish was number two singles. Grbac fell in the first set to Uriarte 6-3. The junior did not let that stop her from taking the second set 6-1. She continued on into the third set taking it in close fashion with a final score of 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.

“Doubles was huge for us today,” Head Coach Erica Perkins Jasper said. “We still didn't start the way we wanted to, however we fought back and showed some amazing guts at #1 to get the point. In singles, all in all we played much more disciplined tennis and the results showed. I am tremendously proud of our team.”

The Lobos increase their overall record to 5-6 and will continue on the road to trek the state of California to face Cal State Northridge and Loyola Marymount on their respective home courts.
