Lobos Come Home After Winning Two Road Matches

STOCKTON, CALIF.— The Lobos come back home from defeating two tough teams this weekend in California. Some top players from the weekend include Maria Sablina going undefeated for the weekend at singles and doubles, along with first-time doubles team Michaela Oldani and Alyssa Caffey who are now 2-0 in doubles.
The Lobos started their weekend facing off against Fresno Pacific who were 11-3 going into the match.
It was now onto singles keeping the momentum going for UNM.
Susanna Kuuttila defeated Marie Boura at number two singles. UNM won 6-4, 6-3.
At number four singles, Maria Sablina defeated Erika Januskova with a score of 6-4, 6-3.
At the number six spot, Katie Wookey faced off against Elizabeth McFeeters winning with a score of 6-2, 6-2.
UNM defeated Fresno Pacific with a close match score of 4-3 pushing their opponent’s record to 11-4, while increasing UNM’s record to 6-5.
The Lobos finished their weekend strong defeating Pacific at their own court 4-2.
Again at number one doubles, Maria Sablina and Nikolina Grbac fought hard to the end clinching the doubles point for the Lobos defeating Suarez/Masarova. The Lobos were down 5-7 pushing it to a tiebreak winning the match in the tiebreak for UNM 9-8.
The two teams moved onto singles after UNM took the first point of the match by winning singles.
Michaela Bezdickova played at the number one spot defeating Iveta Masarova 6-2, 6-4.
Maria Sablina went undefeated for the weekend beating her opponent Gergana Boncheva with a score of 6-2, 6-2.
Michaela Oldani seeing some singles action played at the number six spot. She only gave up two games to win the match 6-1, 6-1 against Megan Yu.
The Lobos are now 7-5 in the spring season after two straight wins in California this weekend.
“It was a hard fought win for us today. The doubles point turned out to be huge. Maria Sablina and Nikolina Grbac came back from being down 5-7 to win in a tie break to clinch the match in doubles,” Head Coach Roy Canada said. “It was also a hard fought win against Fresno Pacific all the way to the end. It was a team effort and a solid result against a talented team. Overall, it was a solid weekend for us.”
The Lobos will play their last home matches on March 24-25, 2012 against conference teams Boise State and Air Force Academy with both matches starting at 2 p.m.
