Horned Frogs Blank Air Force in Mountain West Opener

March 24, 2012

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – TCU’s women’s tennis team rolled to a 7-0 win over Air Force in its Mountain West opener Saturday at New Mexico’s Linda Estes Tennis Center.

The No. 39 Horned Frogs snapped a two-match losing skid and improved to 8-5 overall and 1-0 in the MW. Air Force fell to 14-4, 0-1. TCU never lost to Air Force as a member of the Mountain West and is 7-0 all-time against the Falcons.

“It was a good day, the kids competed really well,” TCU coach Dave Borelli said. “It’s our first 7-0 match of the year and I think this is one of the better Air Force teams they’ve had since I’ve been coaching in the Mountain West. Winning solves all problems so it was good to get one under our belt. We need to come back tomorrow with that killer instinct like we had today.”

TCU opened the match with wins at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles to clinch the point and take a 1-0 lead. Gaby Mastromarino and Simona Parajova improved to 7-1 this spring with an 8-5 dismissal of Christine Molina and Tiffany Tran at the third spot.

Federica Denti and Kelsey Sundaram provided the clinching win on the top court, an 8-5 win of their win over Melissa Cecil and Tahlia Smoke. It brought the Frog tandem to 7-4 this spring as doubles partners.

The Frogs won all six singles matches, with five of those coming in straight-set fashion. Freshman Stefanie Tan ran her winning streak to six when she took care of Cecil, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles.

Parajova won at the No. 2 spot, a 6-4, 6-3 win over Molina, while Olivia Smith returned to her winning ways with a 6-4, 6-3 triumph over Tiffany Tran at No. 3 singles.

Denti was a 6-5, 6-2 winner over Smoke on the fourth court and Gabi Barbosa won 6-4, 6-2 over Natasha Rizvi at No. 6 singles. In the lone match that went to a third set, Sundaram picked up a 6-1, 6-7, 1-0 (7) win at No. 5 singles.

TCU returns to action Sunday against Boise State to close out a four-match road trip. First serve is set for 10 a.m.
