Lobos Finish Conference Opening Weekend 0-2 With More Matches to Come

March 25, 2012

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.—The Lobos had a great crowd turnout for the last two home matches of the season with some of the students making posters and yelling their hearts out to cheer on the Lobos in their conference opening weekend. The Lobos could not pull together a win for the crowd falling 6-1 to Boise State and Air Force.

“This entire week we worked as hard as we could. We conditioned and practiced every day to get ready for these two really important matches,” Freshman Maria Sablina said. “We were confident going into the matches but we didn’t play as well as we would have liked. There is a lot of pressure when you play at home because people are looking at you and expecting you to play well.”

The Lobos fought a 12-3 Air Force team at home on Sunday making them struggle for every point they won.

At number one doubles, Michaela Bezdickova and Maria Sablina were paired up together for the first time facing off against Smoke/Cecil. The duo ended up dropping the match in a set tiebreak 9-8 (7-2).

At number two doubles, Susanna Kuuttila and Michaela Oldani were paired up for the first time in a dual match against Rizvi/Dake. The pair fell with a score of 8-3.

At number three doubles, Alyssa Caffey and Nikolina Grbac took on Molina/Tran. The duo won six games but it was not enough for the win falling with a score of 8-6.

After three tight doubles matches, it was now onto singles.

At number one singles, Michaela Bezdickova faced Melissa Cecil. She defeated her fairly quickly finishing first and winning by a score of 6-2, 6-0.

Susanna Kuuttila played against Christine Molina at the number two spot. Susanna Kuuttila lost the first set 1-6, but gained back some momentum winning the second set 6-2. She fell in the third set only winning one game. The final score was USAFA 6-1, 2-6, 6-1.

Maria Sablina fought against Tiffany Tran at the number three position. She lost in a close first set, but Tran got the better of her winning the match for USAFA 6-4, 6-0.

At number four singles, Kristin Eggleston fell to Tahlia Smoke with a score of 6-2, 6-3.

At number five singles, Michaela Oldani fell to Hannah Dake with a score of 6-1, 6-2.

Alyssa Caffey took on Natasha Rizvi playing for her second time in dual play at the number six spot. She won her first set 6-1 but could not close it in the second dropping the set 6-4. She fell by two points in the third set tiebreak falling to Rizvi with a final score of 1-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8).

The Lobos are now 0-2 in conference play and have five more conference matches to be played before the Mountain West Tournament on April 26, 2012.

“We are going to have to brush this off and figure out a way to wake up tomorrow morning and say ‘I can do this’ and play to our ability,” Head Coach Roy Canada said. “For some reason, we are playing a lot better on the road than we have played at home all year. The rest of the season is on the road and we are going to have to figure out how we can come with the goods.”

The Lobos play UNLV and San Diego State in Las Vegas, Nevada this weekend March 31st and April 1st with both matches starting at 10 a.m.
