Lobos Clinch Rio Grande Rivalry Win on Senior Day

March 30, 2013

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Lobos couldn’t have asked for a better day to win. The sun was shining, no wind, Rio Grande Rivalry, and it was the last time that the seniors will ever play at home. The Lobos edged past New Mexico State 4-3 with a clinch win at number four singles by Sarah Mahboob Khan.

The Lobos took an early lead to start the day by taking the doubles point.

At number two doubles, Khan and her partner senior Michaela Oldani got the ball rolling with a 8-4 win over Denise Van der Ben and Annemieke Witte.

The Aggies bounced back taking number one doubles 8-5 over senior Laura Richardson and partner Michaela Bezdickova.

The doubles point came down to the winner at number three but that didn’t seem to put any pressure on the Lobos.

Nikolina Grbac and senior Kristin Eggleston clinched the win with a score of 8-4 over Mia Brandt and Jodie Williams.

The Lobos took the lead 1-0 and were looking to keep that momentum going for them. New Mexico State had other plans.

The first off the court was senior Eggleston at number three singles after a loss to Van der ben with a score of 6-3, 6-1. This put the Aggies up on the scoreboard.

At number two singles, Grbac fell with a score of 6-2, 6-1 to Ginet Pinero with a score of 6-2, 6-1. The Aggies took the lead 2-1.

The next to finish was number one singles. This was good news for the Lobos as Bezdickova tied up the score with a final score of 7-5, 6-0. The score was now all tied up at 2-2.

New Mexico State got the edge one more time as they took number five singles over Richardson 6-4, 6-1.

Senior Oldani finished fifth and just in time for the Lobos to tie up the score once more. She finished the match 6-3, 6-3 over Mia Brandt. The scoreboard was tied up again at 3-3 and it all came down to the winner of number four singles.

At number four for the clinch win, Khan faced Witte and took the first set 6-2. Witte was on the verge of making a comeback in the second set. With all of the pressure on this court, it seemed like Witte had a more difficult time of handling it and Khan used that to her advantage.

With the help of her teammates cheering her on, Khan gained the extra boost needed in order to clinch the match and the dual match win with a score of 6-2, 7-5.

The Lobos increase their overall record to 6-8 and will continue the rest of their schedule on the road. The Lobos will travel to San Diego, Calif. to face conference opponents San Diego State and UNLV.
