April 8, 2012
USAF ACADEMY, Colo. -
AFA put SDSU in a minor hole early as the Hannah Dake and Natasha Rizvi upended Alicia Aguilar and Julia Wais, 8-3, at No. 2 doubles. The Aztecs' top duo of Roxanne Ellison and Sierra Ellison, however, prevented the Falcons from claiming the point when they notched an 8-5 win over Melissa Cecil and Tahlia Smoke.
The deciding match came down to No. 3 where Emma Cioffi and Laura Antonana Iriarte were engaged in a tight battle with Christine Molina and Tiffany Tran. The San Diego State tandem saved two match points at 6-5 and 7-6 in the tiebreaker to squeeze out the 9-8 (9-7) victory to propel the Aztecs to the 1-0 lead.
SDSU doubled its lead when Wais was victorious for a ninth consecutive outing. The MW Co-Player of the Week dismissed Cecil in straight sets, 6-0, 6-4, at the top of the singles lineup.
The Aztecs moved ahead, 3-0, when Antonana Iriarte rallied from a 6-1 first-set loss to post a 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 decision over Molina at No. 2.
With San Diego State one point away from its fifth Mountain West win, Aguilar came through in the clutch to win in three sets. The Aztec junior was blanked by Smoke in the first set, 6-0, but answered with a 6-3 victory in the second. Aguilar then saved match point at 5-4 in the third and eventually went on to win, 0-6, 6-3, 7-5, to give Aguilar her sixth straight win and SDSU the decision.
Trailing 4-0, Air Force logged its first point when Rizvi downed Roxanne Ellison, 6-4, 7-5, at No. 6. The Falcons tacked on another point as Tran was a 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 winner in her match with Sierra Ellison.
Kristin Buth ended the scoring with a 7-6(7-5), 2-6, 7-5 victory over Dake at No. 5. The win is Buth's third straight in singles.
San Diego State returns to action on Wednesday April 11, when it plays host to San Diego at Aztec Tennis Center. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m. PT.
