April 14, 2012
Fort Worth, Texas --- The 38th ranked TCU Horned Frogs showed why they are nationally ranked, clinching the Mountain West championship with a perfect 7-0 league mark, defeating a game Lobo squad 6-1. Michaela Bezdickova defeated the nation's 72nd-ranked player Stefanie Tan in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 for UNM's point.
The Horned Frogs improved to 15-5 overall, while the Lobos dropped to 8-11 overall and 1-6 in the league. Both teams will now head to the Mountain West Tournament April 26-29 at San Diego State.
TCU swept through all three doubles matches to pick up the doubles point, although UNM's top team of Bezdickova and Maria Sablina battled tough with the 72nd-ranked doubles squad of Millie Nichols and Olivia Smith.
Smith's win over Sablina 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2 singles was the one that clinched the match, but the drama unfolded at No. 1 singles, where Bezdickova ran her personal winning streak for four straight. She broke Tan twice in each set on the way to the victory, as she improved to a team-best 21-9 on the year, including a 2-1 record against nationally-ranked foes.
At No. 5 singles, Michele Oldani but up a solid fight, dropping a 6-4, 6-4 decision to Gaby Mastromarino.
"They are the best team in our conference and they certainly played like it today," said head coach Roy Cañada. "We came up with a very solid win at No. 1 singles and we gave them a good fight in Nos. 2, 4, and 5."
Cañada added, "We competed better against them this year than last year and we showed improvement. The thing that we as coaches are most proud of is that the team never gave up and fought hard every single point."
NOTES: Bezdickova's 21 wins are the most on the team, 10 ahead of Sablina's 11 wins ... the match was Sablina's first at No. 5 singles this season.
