TCU Knocks Off Rice, 4-3, in Regular Season Finale
April 15, 2012
FORT WORTH – No. 38-ranked TCU women’s tennis picked up a 4-3 win over Rice on Sunday in its regular season finale at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
The Horned Frogs improved to 16-5 on the year and have won their last nine matches. The No. 36 Owls dropped to 14-7 this spring. TCU will take a nearly two-week break before opening the Mountain West tournament on April 28 after a first-round bye as the No. 1 seed.
“I’m glad we won, it will help us in the rankings,” TCU coach Dave Borelli said. “It keeps our confidence up going to the conference tournament. We’ve won nine in a row going into the tournament. We want to win it and leave the conference on a high note. I feel good about us making the NCAAs at this point either as an at-large or with the automatic bid.”
On her senior day, Gaby Mastromarino continued her stellar spring in doubles play, joining Simona Parajova for an 8-5 win over Kimberly Anicete and Leah Fried. The duo tallied a 14-1 mark this spring as doubles partners.
At the top doubles court, No. 72-ranked Millie Nichols and Olivia Smith followed with an 8-4 triumph over Rice’s No. 33-ranked tandem of Natalie Beazant and Dominique Harmath. Federica Denti and Kelsey Sundaram added an 8-7 (5) win at the expense of Katie Gater and Ana Guzman at No. 2 doubles.
Mastromarino wasted no time getting right back to work for the Frogs as singles play commenced. Playing on the purple Bartzen Varsity Courts for the final time, the Jupiter, Fla., native tallied a 6-0, 6-2 win over Fried to make it 2-0 in favor of TCU.
Rice refused to go quietly, notching wins at Nos. 1 and 2 singles to even the score, but TCU quickly put the match out of reach with triumphs at the third and fifth courts. Parajova won 6-3, 6-4 over Gater, while Nichols added a 6-4, 6-0 downing and Anicete for the four needed points for the win.
TCU returns to action April 28 in San Diego as the top seed in the 2011 Mountain West Women’s Tennis Championship. The Frogs will learn their opponent at a later date.
