Falcons Down Colorado State, 6-1

April 20, 2012

The Air Force women's tennis team won its second straight Mountain West match Friday, downing Colorado State 6-1 at the Academy. With the victory, Air Force improved to 17-6 overall and 3-3 in the Mountain West, setting a new school record for most conference wins in one season since moving to Division I in 1996. CSU, meanwhile, fell to 5-15 overall and 0-7 in league play.

The Falcons, who also posted the most overall wins in one season since 1999, jumped out to a 1-0 lead by sweeping the three doubles matches. Senior Tahlia Smoke and junior Melissa Cecil improved to 13-7 at the No. 1 spot with an 8-5 victory over Tori Arneson and Kaley Schultz. Junior Christine Molina and freshman Tiffany Tran clinched the point and moved to 15-5 at the No. 3 spot with an 8-5 victory over Adriana and Veronika Wojakowska, while junior Hannah Dake and freshman Natasha Rizvi won the No. 2 match 8-6 over Emese Kardhordo and Lauren Mulhern.

The Falcons used that momentum in singles play as Rizvi topped Veronika Wojakowska at the No. 6 spot, 6-0, 6-1 for a 2-0 lead. Molina lost the No. 2 match to Natalie Heffron, 6-3, 6-1, but Air Force took the final four matches, beginning with Tran, who beat Mulhern 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4 for a 3-1 lead.

Dake clinched the match for AFA with a 6-4, 6-4 triumph over Kardhordo at No. 5 and Cecil snapped a six-match losing streak at the top spot and won her first league match of the season by defeating Arneson, 6-0, 7-6(3). Smoke closed out the match by rallying from a set down to beat Schultz, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0(8) at the No. 3 position.

"It was nice to play at home, but even nicer to have the team come through with a Mountain West win," said Air Force head coach Kim Gidley. "Sweeping all three doubles gave us a lot of confidence going into the singles. Colorado State is a solid team and all the singles matches were very tough match-ups for us. I was really pleased with the energy and fight of all our players."

Air Force closes out its regular season on Saturday, April 2 against 60th-ranked Wyoming at the Academy beginning at 2 p.m.
