Fort Collins, Colo. – The Colorado State women’s tennis team fell to UNLV, 4-1 in a shortened match late Friday evening in Fort Collins, Colo.
In singles, the Rebels captured victories at No. 2 and No. 3 positions to give them a 3-0 lead. Kendall then defeated Anett Ferenczi-Bako 6-1, 7-5 at the No. 4 position to give the Rams a lift. Iren Kotseva then defeated Maddie Buxton 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 6 position to clinch the overall match for UNLV.
Stevens was in a third set tie-breaker, (6-4, 6-7, 5-4) with Aleksandra Josifoska at the No. 1 position when play was stopped. Stevens battled back to win the second set after being down to force the tie-breaker, against the 37th ranked player in the country.
“What I told the team was, that was the highest level of tennis I have ever seen a Colorado State team play,” said head coach Jon Messick. “Yeah we lost the match, but we competed relentlessly on every court. Abby played Aleksandra Josifoska extremely well, and she is one of the top players in the conference and has a national ranking. I am just really proud of the level at which our team played today, they just did a great job and unfortunately the score doesn’t represent that.”
The Rams will conclude regular season play when they travel to Greeley, Colo., to take on Northern Colorado Monday, April 22 at 11 a.m.
