COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Colorado State women’s tennis team lost a 4-0 to San Diego State in the quarterfinals of the Mountain West Championships.

“I thought we competed very well against the top team in our conference,” said head coach Jon Messick. “I think we had good chances in doubles but we couldn’t close it out. I also think in singles we were a lot more competitive than the last time we played them. Our team showed today that we can compete with top teams in our conference.”

In doubles, the Aztecs claimed wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions to secure the doubles point. Alicia Aguilar and Isabelle Hoorn defeated Mollie Cooper and Abby Stevens 8-4 at the No. 3 position. Julia Wais and Kristin Buth then defeated Natalie Heffron and Adriana Wojakowska 8-5 to take the doubles point.

In singles, the Aztecs defeated the Rams in straight sets at the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 positions to secure the overall match. Buth defeated Wojakowska 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 4 position to put the Aztecs up 2-0. Aguilar then defeated Heffron, 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 2 position. Stevens then lost a hard-fought match to Wais 6-1, 7-5, which clinched the match for San Diego State.

Yesterday evening it was announced that Rams’ Freshman Abby Stevens was named to the Mountain West all-conference team. Stevens was one of just three freshman in the conference to earn the prestigious honor. Stevens’ honor is the second in a row for a Colorado State freshman, following Natalie Heffron’s selection last season in her first year of play.

“We thought she deserved it, and she has been extremely competitive at the No. 1 position, and for her to do that as a freshman is a great accomplishment,” Messick said.

The loss ends the Rams' season. The team, however, with no seniors and five freshmen on the roster, laid a solid foundation for the future and showed considerable improvement over the final month of the season.
