W. Tennis Downs Nevada; Advances To MW Finals

On Saturday morning, the San Diego State women's tennis team notched its 22nd win on the season, defeating Nevada, 4-1, to advance to the finals at the Mountain West Championships. The victory brings the 39th-ranked Aztecs up to 15-straight matches in the win column and ties them with the best SDSU women's tennis overall record since the 1994 campaign.

San Diego State opened the match by taking the lead with the doubles point. The first duo to post a win was Julia Wais and Kristin Buth, in the second slot, downing Sophie Stevens and Juliette Legendre, 8-4. Clinching the point for SDSU, Alicia Aguilar and Isabelle Hoorn dismissed Caroline Konigsfeldt and Shelia Smiley, 8-5, on court No. 3.

Competition continued is singles play with freshman Tami Nguyen adding to the Aztecs lead. Nguyen posted the win over Legendre in fifth singles, 6-3, 6-2. The Wolf Pack got on the board with a win on court No. 4 as Smiley topped Buth, 7-5, 6-2. Junior Laura Antonana Iriarte brought SDSU within one point of victory after battling with Stevens in third singles, taking the match to three sets, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4. Court No. 2 would see Aguilar take her second victory on the day, securing the win for the Aztecs, as the senior came out on top over Emma Verberne, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.

SDSU will compete in the conference finals for the second consecutive season tomorrow, Sunday, April 28 at 10 am MT. The Aztecs will face either second-seeded UNLV or No. 6 Wyoming on Sunday to determine which Mountain West team will claim the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
