Cowgirl Tennis Has Season Ended With 4-3 Loss To UNLV
April 27, 2013
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -
The sixth seeded Wyoming Tennis team had their season ended by the 65th ranked and second seeded UNLV Rebels in the semifinals of the 2013 MW Tennis Championships on Saturday.
"I'm so proud to be a part of this team and program," said head coach Dean Clower. "We left every ounce of fight on the courts this weekend. Thanks to Sasa, Alexandra and Simona for all they have done over the past four years. They have been the heartbeat of this program and put Wyoming tennis on the map. They have left this program much better then when they arrived. I hope the underclassmen have learned from them. Many thanks to our fans who made the trip down to our two matches and supported us over the year."
For the second day in a row, Wyoming took the lead early as they would win two out of three doubles matches to win the first point of the day. Aleksandra Josifoska and Janine Erasmus won the first match of the day for the Rebels with an 8-5 win over Alexandra Kovacs, 8-5. The number three team of Jessica Parizher and Silviya Zhelyazkova defeated Ella Bourchier and Iren Kotseva by the score of 8-6. Veronica Popovici and Simona Synkova would clinch the point for the Cowgirls in a match that went down to the end. They defeated Lucia Batta and Nives Pavlovic, 9-8 (7-1).
It was quite a battle in singles action as it came down to the final couple of matches on the day to which team came away with the victory. Batta earned the first point of the day for the Rebels with her straight set win, 6-1, 6-3, over Kovacs. Zhelyazkova put the Cowgirls up 2-1 with her 6-4, 6-3 victory against Iren Kotseva. The momentum would start to shift towards UNLV in the next couple of matches. Erasmus evened up the match at two all as she defeated Nemcova, 6-4, 6-3 while Bourchier gave the lead back to the Rebels with a three set win, 2-6, 6-1, 6-4, against Parizher.
Wyoming wouldn't go down without a fight in the final two matches of the day. At the number one position, Veronica Popovici would battle her ranked opponent Aleksandra Josifoska. UNLV would win the first set 6-4, but Popovici gritted out the second set, 7-6 (10-8) to even it all up. Unfortunately, Josifoska took set three, 6-2, to give her the win in the match and the Rebels a 4-2 win overall. The other match that was played and not completed was Pavlovic and Synkova. Each player earned a set as Synkova took the first 7-6 (10-8) and Pavlovic won the second 6-4. In the third set, Synkova was holding a 5-3 lead but it wasn't completed.
The Cowgirls finished up the season with an 11-12 mark overall and a 4-4 record in the Mountain West.
