Batta's Record Run Ends
May 23, 2013
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Lucia Batta saw her school-record 28-match winning streak ended in Thursday's second round of the NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Singles Championship at the Akins Tennis Center in Urbana, Ill.
Playing in cold and windy conditions, Batta lost for the first time since Jan. 20 as she fell to fifth-ranked and fifth-seeded Zsofi Susanyi of California, 6-3, 6-4.
Ranked 59th, Batta had shattered Katarina Malec's school record of 19 straight singles wins that was set in 2000. The only starting player in UNLV men's or women's tennis history to go undefeated in dual matches over an entire season (26-0), Batta finished 38-6 overall to post the second most wins in program history.
With one season left in Las Vegas, her career record is 94-26, which puts her into a tie with Anna Maskaljun for fourth place on the school's all-time list. She would need 32 wins as a senior to break three-time All-American Marianne Vallin's UNLV record of 125 wins set in 1994-97.
Today's loss ends UNLV's season, which included earning a conference tournament title, winning a first round NCAA team match and sending two players (Batta and Aleksandra Josifoska) to the NCAA singles event for the first time in school history.
"This was an incredible year during which we reached a lot of milestones," head coach Kevin Cory said. "Both Lucia and Aleks have been great representatives for our university and the best thing about it is they're not done yet and we're already looking forward to next season."
