New Head Coach, New Turn of Events at NMSU Fall Invitational

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The first day of the NMSU Fall Invitational comes to a close and under the new head coach’s reign, the Lobos finish the day with three singles players into the quarterfinals and all three doubles teams into the round of 16.
In the Crimson singles main draw, Senior Kristin Eggleston advanced to the quarterfinals winning both of her matches in straight sets. The first match was played against UT-Permian Basin’s Casey Acosta dropping only two games to win 6-2, 6-0. She had a little bit of a struggle against NMSU’s Lisa Roslanova in the first set but ended up on top winning the match 6-4, 6-0. She will face Marina Treiweiler of UT-El Paso in the quarterfinals.
Sophomore Katie Wookey dropped only two games in her first match aginst UT-Permian Basin’s Krissy Chavez winning 6-2, 6-0. That win was short-lived however, as she fell in the next round to Abilene Christian’s Hannah Kelley with a score of 6-2, 6-4.
Junior Nikolina Grbac fell in the second round after receiving a bye to UT-El Paso’s Rebeca Calvillo with a score of 6-2, 6-1.
Sophomore Maria Sablina did not go down without a fight against Kaysie Hermsdorf of Abilene Christian. She fell in the end with a score of 6-2, 7-5. She kept her head up and it paid off as she went on to defeat UT-Permian Basin’s Casey Acosta 6-1, 6-2 in consolations.
In the White singles main draw, Senior Laura Richardson advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating her opponents in two tough matches. Her first match was against Abilene Christian’s Jamie Lee Denton winning the match in three sets with a score of 3-6, 6-2, 6-0. She continued her winning streak to defeat UT-Arlington’s Katarina Dikosavijevic in two close sets with a score of 6-4, 7-5. She will face NMSU’s Denise Van Der Ben in the quarterfinals.
Senior Michaela Oldani won both of her matches without much of a struggle it seems as she took her first match 6-3, 6-2 against UT-Permian Basin’s Shelby Green. She dropped only three games the next match against Northern Arizona’s Tatum Rochin to win with a score of 6-2, 6-1. She will face UT-El Paso’s Gabi Vazquez in the quarterfinals.
RS Sophomore Sarah Mahboob Khan made her first collegiate appearance facing TSU’s Alicia Perez in the first round. She fell with a score of 6-1, 6-2. She went on to face Makenzie Mitchell of TSU hoping to turn things around in the consolation draw. She took the match to three sets but could not get the upper hand to fall with a score of 0-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-8).
In doubles, Maria Sablina paired up with Northern Arizona’s Walker to defeat UT-Permian Basin’s Baltazar/Chavez with a score of 8-2. The two will face NMSU’s Pinero/Nguyen in the second round.
“All in all it was a pretty good first day. We've come a long way as a group in terms of energy and basic strategies in singles, and it was nice to see our seniors really step up and lead by example,” Head Coach Erica Perkins Jasper said. “Our performance in doubles was disappointing--we will look to regroup and come out stronger tomorrow on the doubles court.”
