Doubles Team Grbac and Eggleston Advance to Semifinals

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The second day of the tournament leads UNM to the semifinals in doubles. Nikolina Grbac and Kristin Eggleston will take on Abilene Christian’s Hermsdorf/Mongin tomorrow morning.

In doubles, the junior and senior pair of Grbac and Eggleston defeated their opponent from Abilene Christian’s Conrad/Denton dropping only one game. The duo won 8-1 to advance into the semifinals.

The duo of RS Sophomore Sarah Khan and Sophomore Katie Wookey faced UT-El Paso’s Calvillo/Vazquez in doubles falling with a score of 8-1.

In singles, Senior Kristin Eggleston was stopped on her route to the semifinals by UT-El Paso’s Marina Trieweiler with a score of 7-6, 6-1.

Senior Laura Richardson faced NMSU’s Denise Van Der Ben to defeat her 6-2, 6-1 in the quarterfinals. She fell in the semifinals against NMSU’s Annemieke Witte with a score of 6-1, 6-2.

Senior Michaela Oldani put up a tough fight against Gabi Vazquez from UT-El Paso, but could not quite get the win to fall in three sets with a score of 6-1, 2-6, 7-6.

“Today we came out with a new sense of urgency and determination and as a result our energy in doubles was vastly improved and each player challenged themselves to push a little harder on the singles courts, Head Coach Erica Perkins Jasper said. “All in all it was a great day. I know we are looking forward to finishing strong tomorrow across the board.”
