Cowgirl Tennis Begins Weekend Play At Air Force Invitational

The Wyoming doubles team of Veronica Popovici and Simona Synkova wrapped up play at the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships, on Friday, in Pacific Palisades, Calif., while the remaining members of the team opened up play at the Air Force Invite in Colorado Springs.
In their quarterfinal match, the 21st ranked pair fell to Beatrice Capra and Hanna Mar of Duke by the score of 8-2. They will return to action next Wednesday at the ITA Mountain Regional Tournament.
"The players are obviously disappointed with the loss but overall we got a lot out of this tournament," said assistant coach Ewa Szatkowska. "It was good face this kind of competition, which will help later in the season."
The other six members of the tennis team began play at the Air Force Invitational, which start off with doubles. It was a tough go as only one of the three teams won their first match of the day. Silviya Zhelyazkova and Jessica Parizher defeated Julia Metzger and Pascale Neubert of Oregon by the score of 9-7. They will face Caroline Starck and Sandra Dynka of Texas Tech tomorrow. The duo of Christa Gecheva and Alma Espinosa lost to Kedzierski of Illinois and Troedson of Washington State, 8-4, but they rallied to defeat Mattison Sperry and Laura Wegleitner of Colorado, 8-1, in the back draw. Their next match will be against Maddie Buxton and Lauren Pick of Colorado State. The final doubles team in action was Alexandra Kovacs and Sasa Nemcova. They lost to Nikki Sanders and Elizabeth Ullathorne of Texas Tech, 8-3. They will play Long and Hughes of Oregon in their backdraw match.
In singles action, three of the four Cowgirls won their opening matches. Parizher defeated Ffion Davies of South Dakota State, 6-2, 6-2, and will play Audrey O'Connor of Illinois. Espinosa won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, against Erin Troedson of Washington State. Her next opponent will be Ankota Bhatia of Eastern Michigan. In the Echo singles bracket, Gecheva needed three sets, 4-6, 6-2, 10-3 against Lize Leenknecht (Washington State). She will face Carla Manzi of Colorado tomorrow. The other Cowgirl in action was Alexandra Kovacs who fell to Sopohia Bergner of Denver, 6-4, 2-6, 10-6. She will play in the back draw against Florencia Magni of South Dakota State. Both Zhelyazkova and Nemcova will each play tomorrow in singles action as well.
