Lobos Conclude UNM Fall Invitational and 2012 Fall Season

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The final day of the UNM Fall Invitational draws to a close to finish the 2012 fall season for the Lobos. RS Sophomore Sarah Mahboob Khan wins her singles flight going undefeated, Senior Michaela Oldani ends her fall season with a win, and Junior Nikolina Grbac claims consolation title in Turquoise draw as the final day of the tournament wraps up.
The day started off bright and early as the Lobos took to the courts at 9 a.m. to begin their singles matches.
In the Cherry draw, Michaela Bezdickova competed against Utah’s Tereza Bekerova falling in the finals with a score of 7-6, 6-3.
Also in the Cherry draw, Maria Sablina took on UT-El Paso’s Rebeca Cavillo falling in two close sets with a score of 7-5, 6-4 in consolations.
Nikolina Grbac played in both Cherry and Silver draw taking on South Carolina’s Jaklin Alwai in the Cherry draw falling with a score of 6-1, 6-4. Her next opponent was in the Silver draw where she lost with a score of 6-2, 6-3 to Texas Tech’s Kelli Hine.
Katie Wookey competed against Northern Arizona’s Nicole Perez in consolations. It was a tight match with points lasting as long as 15 shots per rally. Despite the long rallies, Perez got the best of her defeating the Lobo with a score of 6-4, 6-3.
Grbac does not come home empty-handed as she claims the consolation title in the Turquoise draw.
In the Black draw, Kristin Eggleston had one tough battle against South Carolina’s Ximena Siles in the finals. The two had some heated moments during the points but Siles came out on top to defeat the Lobo with a score of 6-4, 6-3.
Michaela Oldani dropped only game in her consolation match against Western New Mexico’s Davida Aragon winning the match 6-1, 6-0 also in the Black draw.
“I played really well today,” Oldani said. “I felt like I was hitting my serves and my targets, which was really important for me because I was focusing on that. It was good after having some tough matches this weekend to finish strong with a win. There is still a lot of work to be done after what was shown here this weekend for us to get ready and be better for the spring season.”
In the White draw, Khan finished the day undefeated and won her singles flight as she beat UT-El Paso’s Anastasiya Sylenko with a score of 6-1, 6-2.
“I’m really happy that I won,” Khan said. “I was feeling really good about the way that I’ve been playing for the last two days. I’ve been really confident with my game. I’m really happy that I was able to win today.”
The Lobos conclude their fall season with the end of this tournament and will kick off the spring season with the Beach Tennis Winter Invitational on Jan. 18-20, 2013.

Kristin Eggleston, at the NMSU Fall Invitational held on Sept. 14-16, advanced to the quarterfinals in the Crimson singles draw falling to UT-El Paso’s Martina Trierweiler with a score of 7-6, 6-1.
Laura Richardson at the NMSU Fall Invitational advanced to the semifinals in the White singles draw falling to New Mexico State’s Annemieke Witte with a score of 6-1, 6-2.
In Crimson doubles at the NMSU Fall Invitational, the duo of Kristin Eggleston and Nikolina Grbac are stopped short after their run to the semifinals by Abilene Christian’s Laura Mongin and Kaysie Hermsdorf with a score of 8-2.
Michaela Bezdickova advances to the round of 32 in the pre-qualifying draw at the ITA All-American Championships on Sept. 28-29. She fell in three close sets to Southern California’s Gabrielle DeSimone with a score of 1-6, 6-1, 6-2.
At the ITA Regionals held on Oct. 10-14, Michaela Bezdickova advances to the round of 16 falling in three tight sets to Boise State’s Sandy Vo with a score of 6-7, 6-4, 6-4.
Also at the ITA Regionals, the duo of Nikolina Grbac and Michaela Oldani advance to the round of 32 falling to Boise State’s Sandy Vo and Morgan Basil with a score of 8-1. The duo of Michaela Bezdickova and Maria Sablina also advanced to the round of 32 falling to Brigham Young’s Mackenna Maddox and Morgan Anderson with a score of 9-7.
At the UNM Fall Invitational held Nov. 2-4, the duo of Laura Richardson and Michaela Bezdickova captured third in the Cherry draw as they defeated Texas Tech’s Kelli Hine and Sofya Malysheva with a score of 8-2.
The duo of Kristin Eggleston and Maria Sablina claimed second in the Silver doubles draw at the UNM Fall Invitational as they fell to South Carolina’s Adriana Perieria and Ximena Siles with a close score of 9-7.
At the UNM Fall Invitational, Sarah Mahboob Khan claims White singles draw and ends her fall season on a win streak as she defeated her opponent UT-El Paso’s Anastasiya Sylenko with a score of 6-1, 6-2.

Michaela Bezdickova lost in the finals at the UNM Fall Invitational but defeated on her way the #63 singles player in the nation South Carolina's Jaklin Alwai with a close score of 7-5, 6-3.
