Aztecs Earns Four Wins at Fall Classic II

SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego State women's tennis team won three singles matches and one doubles contest on the opening day of the SDSU Fall Classic II, which runs through Sunday at Aztec Tennis Center.
Dora Somoracz and Isabelle Hoorn picked up San Diego State's first win on Friday as they defeated Nayara Moraes and Carla Nava of Middle Tennessee by the score of 8-6 in the white draw. The duo will now face off with the Kansas pair of Vika Khanevskaya and Anastasia Trubich on Saturday morning.
Other Aztecs competing in doubles included Kristin Buth and Michela Casanova, who just fell short to Dylan Windom and Belen Luduena of Kansas by the score of 8-5 in the red draw. The duo will now continue play in the consolation round on Saturday with a matchup against Washington's Grace Ysidora and Capucine Gregoire.
In the doubles black draw, Laura Antonana Iriarte and Tami Nguyen dropped an 8-3 decision to Elianne Douglas-Miron / Riko Shimizu (Washington) and will now prepare for SMU's Sasha Malyachikova and Hristina Dishkova. Rounding out doubles play was Julia Wais and Alicia Aguilar who were unable to advance after suffering an 8-4 decision to Julija Lukac and Andjela Nemcevic of Washington. The duo isn't done though as they now face Monica Pezzotti and Maria Jose Cardona of Kansas on Saturday.
In singles play, Kristin Buth earned a 6-4, 6-4 win against Nayara Moraes of Middle Tennessee in the black draw, while freshman Tami Nguyen also earned a victory in the same bracket over SMU's Heidi Stewart, 6-7, 6-2, 6-4. Buth advances to a matchup with Washington's Julija Luckac on Saturday and Nguyen will also battle a Husky, as she is set for a contest with Capucine Gregoire of Washington.
Michela Casanova, meanwhile, faced Lucia Kovarcikova of Utah in the grey draw and picked up a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 win. Casanova's next test will be Claire Dreyer of Kansas, who advanced with a 7-6(6), 6-4 victory over Riko Shimizu (Washington).
Alicia Aguilar was matched up against No. 25 Lacey Smyth of Arizona, but suffered a 6-2, 6-2 setback in the white singles draw. Aguilar now prepares for Washington's Andjela Nemcevic in the consolation round on Saturday. San Diego State's nationally ranked singles player, No. 90 Julia Wais, also competed in the same bracket, but was unable to find success after dropping a 7-6, 6-4 decision to Elianne Douglas-Miron of Washington. Wais continues play on Saturday in the consolation bracket against Maria Jose-Cardona of Kansas.
Laura Antonana Iriarte battled with Utah's Sarah Pham in the red draw, but just fell short as she dropped a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 decision. Up next for Antonana Iriarte will be a consolation matchup with SMU's Sasha Malyachikova on Saturday.
Rounding out the Aztecs competing in singles play were Dora Somoracz and Isabelle Hoorn in the gold draw. Somoracz dropped a 6-4, 6-4 decision to Vika Khanevskaya (Kansas), while Hoorn suffered a 7-5, 3-6, 6-1 setback to Washington's Brianna Kemp. Somoracz will continue play in the consolation bracket against Utah's Lexi Antista, while Hoorn will face Dylan Windom of Kansas.
Day two of the SDSU Fall Classic II is set for 9 a.m. PT on Saturday at Aztec Tennis Center. Doubles will start the day and will be followed by singles action.
