SDSU Takes Two Championship Titles at Fall Classic II

SAN DIEGO -- The final day of competition at the SDSU Fall Classic II saw the San Diego State women's tennis team take home two championship titles. On the day, the Aztecs won five of its singles matches and two of its doubles contests as it wrapped up play at Aztec Tennis Center.
In the consolation round of the doubles black draw, both Aztec pairs picked up wins. Laura Antonana Iriarte and Tami Nguyen defeated Washington's Julija Lukac and Andjela Nemcevic, 9-7. Julia Wais and Alicia Aguilar, meanwhile, picked up an 8-6 victory over Elianne Douglas-Miron and Riko Shimizu of Washington.
Other Aztecs competing in doubles included Dora Somoracz and Isabelle Hoorn as they faced off with the Kansas pair of Paulina Los and Claire Dreyer on Sunday morning in the white draw. The duo was unable to earn a victory though, as they dropped a close 9-7 setback. Kristin Buth and Michela Casanova also fell short as they dropped an 8-3 decision to Washington's Brianna Kemp and Sarah Stelle.
San Diego State's nationally ranked singles player, No. 90 Julia Wais faced Washington's Andjela Nemcevic in the white draw and picked up a 6-4, 6-1 victory to earn the consolation championship. Dora Somoracz was also crowned champion on Sunday as she defeated Anastasia Trubich of Kansas, 6-3, 6-4, in the consolation gold bracket.
Three other Aztecs picked up wins on Sunday in singles play, each by a convincing margin. In the white draw, Alicia Aguilar defeated Maria Jose-Cardona of Kansas by a score of 6-4, 6-4. In the gold bracket, meanwhile, Isabelle Hoorn cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory against Utah's Lexi Antista (Utah). Rounding out the wins in singles was Laura Antonana Iriarte, who earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory against Susan McRann of Arizona.
Tami Nguyen fell just short of a championship in the black draw on Sunday as she dropped a 6-2, 6-3 decision to Washington's Julija Luckac. Kristin Buth also suffered a setback in the same bracket, dropping 6-2, 6-2 decision to Capucine Gregoire of Washington. Rounding out the Aztecs competing was Michela Casanova, who battled down the stretch with Arizona's Inge Hendrikx, but ultimately dropped a 2-6, 7-5, 12-10 decision.
San Diego State will now be off until its dual-match season. The Aztecs will open that campaign by playing host to UC Riverside and Cal State Fullerton on Jan. 19, 2013.
