"Serving Up Love" to Feature UNM Women's Tennis Team

Jan. 29, 2013

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - On the court, how does one see the UNM women's tennis team? The first word that should come to your mind is competitive. That's exactly how the Lobos are going to be this weekend as they play against Western New Mexico at home on February 2, 2013.

Now how about off the court? On February 9th from 1-4 p.m., you can get that chance to watch the Lobos help with tennis youth games and interact with the community in Santa Fe, N.M. as they participate in the Girls Inc. of Santa Fe event "Serving Up Love".

The event will be held at the Shellaberger Tennis Center and tickets will be $10. Kids under 19 will be free as long as they are accompanied by an adult.

Head Coach Erica Perkins Jasper and Assistant Coach Kelcy McKenna will also be participating but not in helping with youth games. They will be shaking off the rust from their arms and legs as they play a doubles match together against Former Lobo All-American and Current Judge Timothy Garcia and Jimmy Parker.

Judge Timothy Garcia earned All-American honors in 1976 in singles and was the only UNM player to participate in the NCAA Championships all four years of his college career.

Jimmy Parker is a world-renowned tennis player. He is the winner of 110 USTA National Championships (3rd All-time) and 23 ITF World Championships (Top Ten All-time). He is a member of World Championship US Dubler, Perry, Austria, Von Cramm, and Britannia Cup Teams and is a former US Junior Davis Cupper, All-American and Head Coach at Rice, former Coach of the Year and 13-time Player of the Year.

"We couldn't be more excited about participating in the upcoming event to support Girls, Inc," Perkins Jasper said. "It should be a fun afternoon and it is a great chance for our young women to give back to the local community and to serve as role models.  Girls, Inc.'s mission to inspire girls to be strong, smart, and bold certainly aligns well with what we are trying to do here with New Mexico Women's Tennis."
