Jan. 31, 2012

FORT WORTH – The TCU women’s tennis team hits the road for the first time this season Wednesday when it travels to Waco for a matchup with Baylor. First serve is set for 3:30 p.m., from the Hurd Tennis Center.

Baylor, which holds an 8-0 record and is ranked No. 5 in the Campbell’s/ITA College Tennis Rankings, is the highest-ranked opponent TCU has faced since March 12, 2011 when the Frogs fell to third-ranked Miami. TCU (3-0) is ranked No. 47 in the team rankings.

TCU holds a 17-12 edge all-time against its former Southwest Conference and future Big 12 foe, but the Bears have claimed wins in each of the past six meetings. The two programs last met April 17, 2009, with Baylor picking up a 4-1 triumph.

Millie Nichols and Olivia Smith, ranked No. 31 in the ITA doubles rankings, lead the Frogs in doubles play. They are 2-0 this spring and 10-3 overall. Federica Denti and Kelsey Sundaram are ranked No. 57 and are 2-1 thus far this spring.

In singles play, Denti, Nichols and Smith are 3-0 through the first three matches of the year. Smith is 2-0 from the No. 1 spot and 1-0 at the No. 2 position. Denti, playing at the Nos. 4 and 5 this year, has won 10-straight dual singles matches dating back to last spring.

At 3-0, TCU is off to its best start since the spring of 2005 when it won the first six dual matches on the schedule. Baylor is the third-straight opponent from the Lone Star State on the schedule after the Frogs defeated Texas State and Lamar last weekend.
