Mountain West Announces Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week

UNLV's Alex Bull has been named the Mountain West Men's Tennis Player of the Week, while San Diego State's Julia Wais and UNLV's Lucia Batta have been selected as MW Co-Women's Tennis Players of the Week.
A product of London, England, Bull won two of his three singles matches last week, with his lone loss coming to the nation's 33rd-ranked player, Yannick Hanfmann of top-ranked USC (2-6, 2-6). Bull began the week by downing UC Irvine's Ryan Cheung in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, in the Rebels' season opener on Thursday. He went on to post the clinching point in UNLV's 4-2 upset victory over No. 45 South Florida on Sunday, notching a 7-6, 6-4 win over Juan Carlos Acuna to give the Rebels their first win of the season at the ITA Kickoff Weekend event at Marks Stadium in Los Angeles, Calif.
Wais, hailing from Goeppingen, Germany, went a combined 6-0 last week as No. 53 San Diego State posted a 2-1 record against No. 26 Pepperdine (L, 3-4), UC Riverside (W, 7-0) and Cal State Fullerton (W, 7-0). In a narrow 4-3 loss at Pepperdine, Wais and teammate Alicia Aguilar clinched the doubles point for the Aztecs with their 9-8 (4) victory over the tandem of Arianna Colffer and Ali Walters at the No. 2 doubles position, before Wais posted a straight-sets 6-3, 6-2 win over 72nd-ranked Alejandra Granillo at the top of the singles lineup. Three days later, Wais continued her perfect play with two more doubles and singles wins. Teamed with Aguilar, the Aztec duo clinched the doubles point when they downed UC Riverside's Natalie McKay and Kat Saltarelli at No. 2, 8-3. In singles competition, Wais provided SDSU with its third team point with a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 1 over Jamie Raney. After a brief break, Wais and Aguilar picked up an 8-2 decision over Cal State Fullerton's Kalika Slevcove and Monica Rodriguez. Then in singles, Wais was the first off the court as she knocked off Tiffany Mai, 6-3, 6-2, at the top spot.
A native of Budapest, Hungary, Batta went a combined 3-0 against No. 7 Cal (L, 1-6) and No. 32 San Diego (L, 1-6) last weekend. Batta began the weekend by upsetting 36th-ranked Tayler Davis of Cal, 7-5, 6-2, at the No. 2 singles position on Friday. Moving to the top of the singles lineup on Saturday, Batta went on to down San Diego's Stephanie Hoffpauier in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6. In doubles action against the Toreros, Batta and partner Manon de Lanlay knocked off the duo of Hoffpauir and Idl Haciraifoglu, 8-3, at the No. 2 position, making Batta a combined 3-0 vs. two top-35 squads during the ITA Kickoff Weekend event.
