Air Force head coach Kim Gidley is in her 14th season at the helm of Air Force’s women’s tennis program. The first civilian head coach in the history of the program, Gidley became the winningest coach in the history of the program in 2003 with her 76th victory. She recorded her 100th career victory during the 2005-06 season against South Dakota State and has a 168-188 career record.
Gidley, a 1989 graduate of Southern Illinois - Edwardsville, has led the Falcons to consecutive 16-win seasons and the 32 wins are the most in a two-year span since the 1999 and 2000 seasons (34). She also led her team to a 12-match winning streak last season, the longest since Air Force moved to Division I status in 1996.
The Falcons split a pair of matches a couple of weeks ago to open the 2012 spring season. Despite winning the doubles point, Air Force dropped a 4-2 decision to Colorado in the spring opener on Jan. 20. Senior Tahlia Smoke and junior Melissa Cecil won the No. 1 doubles match, while junior Christine Molina and freshman Tiffany Tran won at No. 3 to capture the doubles point. However, Cecil was the only Falcon to win in singles, defeating Winde Janssens, 2-6, 7-6, 6-2 at the No. 1 spot.
The following day Air Force blanked Northern Colorado, 7-0, in Greeley, Colo. The Falcons won at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles for the point, then won all six singles matches, five of them in straight sets. Molina, Tran and junior Hannah Dake each won two matches against the Bears.
Air Force travels to Lincoln, Neb., for a pair of matches. The Falcons will play Nebraska on Saturday, Feb. 11 and Northern Iowa on Sunday, Feb. 12.
