No. 54 SDSU Plays Host to No. 56 UC Irvine

Feb. 16, 2012

SAN DIEGO - The 54th-ranked San Diego State women's tennis squad returns to the court on Saturday when it plays host to No. 56 UC Irvine. First serve is set for noon PT at Aztec Tennis Center.

SDSU will look to get back to its winning ways after rain derailed its most recent attempt on Monday vs. Hawai'i. The Aztecs (2-3), who have lost their last two, were on their way to leveling their season record at 3-3, except Mother Nature had her own plans.

San Diego State claimed the doubles point, but singles action was delayed a couple of hours due to inclement weather. Both teams sent their top three singles players to compete when the courts were dry, but the rain came shortly thereafter. The match, which started at 2 p.m. PT, was called just before 11 p.m. PT.

Roxanne Ellison and Sierra Ellison, along with Julia Wais and Alicia Aguilar, were victorious in doubles to secure the point. When the decision was made to call off the match, Julia Wais was leading 6-5 at No. 1, Emma Cioffi was deadlocked at No. 2, 6-6, but held a 4-1 lead in the tiebreaker, and Laura Antonana Iriarte was up, 6-4, 2-2, at the third singles spot.

A season ago, SDSU traveled to UCI and defeated the Anteaters, 5-2. In the history of the series, which spans 39 meetings, San Diego State has emerged with the win on 31 occasions.

UC Irvine is 3-3 on the season and takes on Pepperdine at Anteater Tennis Stadium on Thursday before heading to SDSU for Saturday's match. UCI has won two of its last three matches, claiming a 6-1 win over BYU, falling to Hawai'i, 4-3, before emerging with a 4-3 decision against Wyoming. The Anteaters hit the road having dropped both of their road matches this season (at USC, at UCLA).

SDSU's homestand continues next week when LSU pays a visit to Montezuma Mesa. The Aztecs and Tigers will take the court on Tuesday, Feb. 21, at 2 p.m. PT.
