March 16, 2012
FORT WORTH – TCU’s women’s tennis team begins a four-match road trip Sunday when it travels to No. 14 Alabama. First serve I set for 12 p.m., from Alabama’s Tennis Stadium.
The 32nd-ranked Horned Frogs are 7-3 this season and on a three-match winning streak. The Crimson Tide, on a four-match winning streak of its own, is 9-2 this season, including a 4-0 mark on its home courts.
At No. 32 in the Campbell’s/ITA College Tennis Rankings, TCU holds its highest ranking since the Feb. 23, 2010 rankings, when it was also ranked No. 32. Alabama is the second top-15 opponent of the season for the Frogs, which also faced No. 5 Baylor on Feb. 1.
TCU has dropped all three meetings in the all-time series with Alabama, including a 4-3 defeat when the two schools last met in 2010 in Tuscaloosa. The Crimson Tide also claimed a 4-3 win in 2009.
Sunday’s match is the first of four straight on the road for TCU while classes are not in session for spring break. The Frogs travel to No. 39 Florida State on March 21 before beginning their final season of Mountain West play against Air Force on March 24. TCU is 1-1 this season in road matches.
Federica Denti and Stefanie Tan have led the Frogs in singles play this season, with Denti holding the squad’s top ledger. The Bellano, Italy, native is 7-1 this spring and has won four-straight matches. Tan is 6-3, including a 3-1 record from the No. 1 position.
For doubles play, Gaby Mastromarino and Simona Parajova are 5-0 this spring from their No. 3 spot. TCU’s doubles play received a boost in its last match as Millie Nichols returned to the top of the lineup with partner Olivia Smith. The Frog tandem is 4-1 on the year and ranked 59th in the nation.
Alabama holds two spots in the ITA singles rankings with Mary Anne Macfarlane checking in at No. 23 and Alexa Guarachi at No. 57. In doubles, Guarachi and Courtney McLane are ranked No. 18 to lead the Crimson Tide, while three other Alabama duos are found among the nation’s top 80.
